Vans Features Young Filipino Artists And Their Love For Music
Vans celebrates emerging local artists with a new campaign
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Vans, the global icon for youth culture and creative self-expression, is proud to present “Make It Heard”, which celebrates the artistry of emerging local artists. Vans Philippines features Filipino artists Ena Mori and Paolo Sandejas to talk about their creative process and how music helps them connect with their community.
THE HISTORY OF VANS AND MUSIC
While Vans has long established its foothold in the skateboarding community, the “Off The Wall” brand has successfully made its mark in the music scene. In 1966, Vans made its big move in the music industry by sponsoring Warped Tour, the largest traveling punk rock music festival in the USA and Canada.
Over the years, Vans continues its support to both local and international musicians. Vans launched “Sidestripe Sessions”, a digital music series that featured a diverse range of global artists across different genres, and Vans Musicians Wanted, a digital music competition that invites up and coming musicians from across the globe to enter for a chance to win prizes and other opportunities.
MAKE IT HEARD
Tapping into the stories and artist identities, Vans captures what it meant to be a new musician in the OPM scene for Ena Mori and Paolo Sandejas.
“The hardest thing is to keep myself original,” says Ena, a 23-year old singer-songwriter whose pop music pushes boundaries. “There is pressure to stay on trend or hype a certain style of music.” Ena’s newest album, “DON’T BLAME THE WILD ONE”, has received positive reviews from music critics.
“At the start, I didn’t really know what type of music to put out,” says Paolo, “I was bouncing around different genres. [But I realized] I don’t have to be anything other than myself and I can just enjoy and own that.” Paolo is known for his hit songs “Sorry” and “Lost” and continuously fuses indie pop, alternative rock, and neo soul in his ear-catching melodies.
BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
“Make It Heard” is the newest addition to Vans’ continuous campaign to support and empower young musicians from diverse genres and backgrounds by helping nurture communities.
“Vans is very fashion-forward. They love to collaborate with creative people, support creatives, and connect a lot of creative people. As a musician, it’s nice to see brands that value creativity and expression,” says Ena and Paolo. “When I see the reaction in the audience — that’s the best feeling. Seeing people connect to your music, seeing people enjoy it, the ways that your music impacts their lives make you feel accomplished with what you did.”
Throughout the year, Vans will continue to introduce new musicians and uplift diverse artists with their purpose to be a global platform for creativity and all forms of expression.
